We have something to say about the power of collective giving to improve the lives of Black Americans: It works.

We are the African American Legacy, a grant making initiative of The Chicago Community Trust. When people come together to share resources and make investments in our organizations and communities, the results are positive and impactful. Our many donors trust African American Legacy to make smart decisions about their philanthropy gifts.  Learn more about our work here.

In 2013, African American Legacy launched its Voice Not Violence grant making cycle, a bold effort to fund programs that deeply engage young people in creative expression as a response, reaction or alternative to Chicago’s violence; awards were given for up to three consecutive years.

Programs funded by Voice Not Violence set out to amplify youth voices so that others – from teachers and counselors, to parents and community leaders – could hear the concerns, ideas and dreams of Chicago’s teens and young adults, perspectives that too often go unheard and unspoken.
