We are the African American Legacy, a grant making initiative of The Chicago Community Trust. When people come together to share resources and make investments in our organizations and communities, the results are positive and impactful. Many people have donated to African American Legacy, trusting us to make smart decisions about their philanthropic gifts.  Learn more about our work here.

In 2013, African American Legacy launched its Voice Not Violence grant making cycle, a bold effort to fund programs that deeply engage young people in creative expression as a response, reaction or alternative to Chicago’s violence; awards were given for up to three consecutive years.

Programs funded by Voice Not Violence set out to amplify youth voices so that others – from teachers and counselors, to parents and community leaders – can hear the concerns, ideas and dreams of Chicago’s teens and young adults, perspectives which too often go unheard and unspoken.
